You've picked the smart switch for the hallway, and the only question left is whether the wiring in your Berwick house will run it. A switch only ever had to break one wire, so in plenty of houses the neutral never came down the wall. Maroondah Electrical & Data has been taking plates off walls from Melbourne's east through to the south-east since 1998, under electrical contractor licence REC 27611. Our electrician settles that on site, with a screwdriver. Ring 03 9738 2000 with the Berwick address and what you want that switch to do. The quote for it costs nothing.

A smart switch stays live while the light is off, and that takes a neutral in the box behind the plate. A plain switch never needed one, which is why so many boxes hold two wires and nothing else.
You don’t have to guess which one you own. Our electrician takes the plate off, reads the wires in the box and tells you on the spot. Where the neutral is there, the new switch goes straight in. Where it isn’t, the job is a single cable from the switch up to the light point above it, priced before anybody cuts plaster.
Dimming brings a second condition. LED lamps and their drivers dim on different gear, and a wrong pairing flickers instead of fading.
Opening up the kitchen, adding a room at the back, putting a charger in the garage: all three come back to one question. How much of the wiring you already own carries into the new work?
Berwick holds two answers at once. The older homes along its established, tree-lined streets and the newer estate housing at Arcadia belong to one suburb. Two jobs off one list can still take very different cable runs. In an older installation the useful work is keeping what is sound and adding circuits where the load has changed. In the newer estates the limit is the switchboard and the room left on it.
The work at a Berwick address runs to:
A brand-new Berwick build works the other way round. The drawing fixes every point months ahead, and that’s where an electrician in Narre Warren picks it up.
Work that arrives in stages goes better when one contractor carries the whole picture, from the first plate to the last certificate. The first stage and the last bring one family-owned business, one licence and the three people who opened it in 1998: Glenn Carmody, Dean Carmody, Stuart Lancaster. Every one of those stages starts at 6 Royan Place, Bayswater North, Victoria 3153, the office and the workshop in one building. From there our electricians drive south-east to Berwick, in the City of Casey. The electrician at your door carries a licence of their own, and insurance with it. The quote, the work and the certificate all carry the one electrical contractor licence, REC 27611. Our own count of completed projects has passed 50,000. The about us page carries the rest, and 03 9738 2000 books any stage of it.
Data cabling needs a licence too, and it belongs beside the power rather than after it. The electricians already wiring your lighting run the computer data cabling, fit the phone and internet points and test the telephone system. One booking, not two.
While a wall is open, the cabling question is which rooms take a fixed point and where in the room it lands. Answer it then and nobody chases a cable through a finished ceiling later.
A Berwick shop, office or warehouse adds to the list: emergency and exit lighting, test and tagging, and maintenance booked to a date rather than a breakdown. What the premises can add on top of that comes back to the switchboard and its three-phase supply.
Maroondah Electrical & Data doesn't work to an hourly rate, so there is no hourly figure to give. We price the job as a job, in writing, once an electrician has looked at it. That order matters in a suburb where two similar walls can hide wiring a generation apart.
One plate off the wall shows what else a Berwick house will take: the charger, the kitchen, the data point. Ring 03 9738 2000 for a free quote, or send the Berwick address and the job through our contact page.
