You have the tiler booked, and the bathroom at your Carrum Downs house still has a light, a fan and a power point to place. Where each one goes isn't a matter of taste. It's a measured distance from the bath, the shower and the basin, and Maroondah Electrical & Data has worked to those distances across Melbourne's south-east since 1998. An electrician marks the positions at your property under electrical contractor licence REC 27611. The quote follows the marks, it costs nothing, and the price on it is fixed before anyone starts. Ring 03 9738 2000 and say which room you're starting in.

Water reaches a fitting in three ways, and only one of them is obvious. Direct spray is the one everybody pictures. Splashing off a basin or a trough travels further than people expect. Steam does something else again: it condenses on whatever is coldest in the room, which is often the back of a fitting.
Position therefore comes first, ahead of the cable route and ahead of what you would prefer. An electrician measures out from the bath, the shower opening and the basin, and that distance settles two things in order. First, whether anything may go in at that spot at all. Second, which type of fitting the spot will take. The switch for a bathroom light and fan ends up on the wall outside the door for that reason.
Heat sets its own limits at the other end of the house. A point or a fitting near a cooktop or a wall oven has to survive what comes off them. So we mark up a kitchen benchtop with the appliances drawn on it, well before any of them arrive.
Carrum Downs runs to detached houses, built from the closing decades of the last century onwards, with newer building among them. Wiring of that age is usually sound, so the work in front of you is an alteration rather than a replacement. Alterations are exactly where position becomes the deciding question.
An electrician in Frankston answers the same question in a laundry. What a fitting has to withstand comes from its position in the room, not from the suburb outside.
The work behind those decisions, at a Carrum Downs house:
A family opened Maroondah Electrical & Data in 1998, and it hasn’t changed hands since. Three people own it: Glenn Carmody, Dean Carmody, Stuart Lancaster. The business publishes one number for the work it has finished: more than 50,000 projects.
Our office and our workshop occupy one building at 6 Royan Place, Bayswater North, Victoria 3153. Carrum Downs is a job our electricians drive to, and every street in it answers to the City of Frankston. No council decides how far a power point stands from a bath, though. That distance comes out of the standard the finished work has to meet, which makes the marks on your wall a licensed decision.
Only a licensed electrician marks those positions, and insurance covers what they do at your property. A finished job at a Carrum Downs address leaves a certificate behind it, naming what our electrician did and the contractor licence it ran under. The names behind that licence, and the qualifications each one holds, live on our about us page.
If people work at the Carrum Downs address instead of living in it, the rooms change and the question doesn’t. A staff kitchen, a washroom, a wash-down bay at the back of a workshop: each one puts a fitting near water. Each one takes a measurement before anything goes on a wall.
A business also carries a second kind of work, the testing that falls due on a date whether anything has failed or not. Somebody has to test emergency and exit lighting and write the result down. Portable equipment goes through test and tagging, and scheduled maintenance puts both on a calendar somebody else keeps.
A phone system and the computer network can share one run of cabling, so a fitout sets out the handset points and the network points as one job. That’s worth knowing before the walls close. You decide how many outlets each desk gets and the position they all run back to, and changing either later means opening the wall again. Computer data cabling and telephone systems go in with the power, run by the electricians already on site. The rest of our commercial and industrial list runs off one booking.
Where a Carrum Downs property is let, work for real estate agencies covers the smoke alarms, the safety checks and whatever the tenant has reported. We arrange it with whoever manages the address.
An electrician comes to a room like that twice. The first visit is the rough-in, while the wall linings are off and every run is still reachable. The second is the fit-off, once the tiler and the painter have finished and the fittings can go on the wall. We book rough-in and fit-off stages to suit whoever runs the job, so the useful thing to say when you ring is when the linings are coming off.
A towel rail or a combined heat and fan unit can go in later, and the work is bigger than the fitting looks. Each one belongs to the fixed wiring, so a cable has to reach it. That means opening the ceiling above or the wall behind at one point, then making it good afterwards. Our electrician reads what it lands on at the switchboard during that visit. A heater asks a great deal more of a circuit than a light does.
A position marked on a bare wall takes a pencil to move. The one behind finished tiling takes the tiler back.
An electrician can price the job from three things: the room, the fittings you have chosen, and the date the linings go back on.
Ring 03 9738 2000 with them, or put all three on our contact page.
