Your hall light still answers the switch at one end and ignores the one at the other. It isn't the fitting. Maroondah Electrical & Data has been putting that pair right since 1998, at Emerald addresses and across Melbourne's east. What's failed is the wiring between the two switch positions. Only somebody standing at both of them can tell you which part. Our electrician makes the trip out to Emerald, VIC, in the Dandenong Ranges, and reads both positions with the power isolated. You pay nothing for that visit, and the price our electrician writes down doesn't move afterwards. Ring 03 9738 2000 with the Emerald street name and what the two switches actually do.

A light you can operate from two places isn’t wired like an ordinary one. Instead of a single switch interrupting the supply, a pair of wires runs from one switch position to the other. The light burns whenever both switches have landed on the same wire of that pair. It goes out whenever they land on different wires.
So a light that answers one switch and ignores the other has a break along that pair, or at a terminal inside one of them. Replacing the fitting does nothing about it. That is fault finding: our electrician opens both switch positions and follows the run between them until the break gives itself away.
Everything else an Emerald household rings about:
The council for an Emerald address is Yarra Ranges Shire, and about 5,890 people live here. What that means for a booking is a drive, not a shorter list of what an electrician can do when they arrive.
An Emerald booking goes out under a family business that has answered to three people since 1998: Glenn Carmody, Dean Carmody, Stuart Lancaster. Add up what we have finished since then and the in-house tally passes 50,000 projects. Whoever we send out to Emerald brings an individual licence and insurance of their own.
We book, price and certify Emerald work out of 6 Royan Place, Bayswater North, Victoria 3153. The workshop shares that address with the office. The certificate closing an Emerald job carries electrical contractor licence REC 27611. So does the one closing a job for a household wanting an electrician in Ferntree Gully. Read our about us page for the people who work under that number.
At a trading address in Emerald the list barely changes. The lighting, the power and the switchboard behave exactly as they do in a house. What comes on top is computer data cabling, a telephone system, and the phone and internet points those cables reach. Our own licensed electricians run that cabling, and they wire the power beside it, so a shopfront deals with a single contractor rather than two. That cabling goes in ahead of the plasterer, never afterwards. Exit and emergency lighting, test and tagging and three-phase power fill out what a commercial address books.
Which lights and power points have stopped, and whether anything at the switchboard has moved to off. Those two answers separate a single circuit from something further back at the switchboard.
Neither switch is faulty, and neither is the light fitting. What joins them is the stretch of wiring you cannot see, and reading it is what the drive out to Emerald is for.
To have both switch positions read at your Emerald address, ring 03 9738 2000, or our contact page opens the job in writing.
