Your driveway light in Langwarrin answers a hedge in the wind all evening, then leaves you dark on the walk to the front door. Neither complaint belongs to the lamp; both belong to the detector in front of it. Maroondah Electrical & Data has wired lighting, power and data points across Melbourne since 1998, under electrical contractor licence REC 27611. Our electrician walks the approach and reads the mounting position on site, because you can't settle either one from a description. The visit and the written quote cost nothing. Ring 03 9738 2000 and describe the two moments: the one that sets the light off, and the one that doesn't.

A movement sensor doesn’t see people. It watches for infrared heat crossing between the segments of the area it covers, so anything warmer or cooler than the background will do. A shrub that stood in the sun all day, then cools in an evening breeze, crosses those segments the way a person does.
Geometry decides the other half. A detector reads movement across its field far more readily than movement coming straight at it. Aim one down the length of a driveway and a car can arrive unnoticed, while a branch to one side keeps it firing all evening.
Near the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve, bushland edges and mature planting stand close to the housing. A wall-mounted detector there can have something moving inside its field before anybody arrives.
A detector bolted onto the fitting can only watch what the light points at. Wire a separate detector back to the light instead and it covers the gate or the top of the drive, while the light goes where you need to see. Langwarrin runs from newer estate builds to established homes on generous blocks, and a long driveway asks more of one unit than a short front approach does.
That walk over the property also decides the price. The aim, the mounting height and the run back to the switchboard are what our electrician prices, in writing, before work starts.
One visit can take in the rest of the house:
Maroondah Electrical & Data is a family business, and the family is three people: Glenn Carmody, Dean Carmody, Stuart Lancaster. It has traded since 1998, and the three names have not changed. Its own count of finished work has gone past 50,000 projects. Our workshop and our office are one place, 6 Royan Place, Bayswater North, Victoria 3153, and the drive to Langwarrin, in the City of Frankston, begins there.
Two things ride with the electrician who arrives: a licence in their own name, and insurance to go with it. Electrical contractor licence REC 27611 stays with the business, and it covers whatever goes onto your wall. Our about us page has more about the people behind that.
If you work out of a converted garage, a studio or a shed at the back of the block, the network has further to travel than it does indoors. A copper data cable has a working length. Past it the link doesn’t slow down gracefully, it stops being dependable.
Where the distance beats the cable, the answer is a point along the way with power at it, not a longer run. That’s where the electrical work and the data work stop being two bookings. One visit puts a circuit where the equipment will stand and the cable where the signal has to reach. On a deep Langwarrin block part of that route runs outdoors, so it goes in with the power.
Computer data cabling belongs on an electrician’s licence, and so does the phone and internet outlet a back bedroom never got. A telephone system at a trading address belongs there too. Our electrician runs those cables on the visit already booked for the power.
For a shop or a workshop on Cranbourne-Frankston Road, what you’re about to plug in decides the electrical work. Two questions decide it: whether the switchboard will carry the load, and whether three-phase power has to go in first. Our electrician puts a test and a tag on the portable gear, and scheduled maintenance puts those dates on a calendar somebody else keeps.
Not all of the work is domestic. One registration covers the commercial and industrial side, which is what an electrician in Frankston takes into a shopfront or a light industrial unit. Agencies letting houses here put the smoke alarms and the safety checks through the team that handles the repairs.
A build date settles nothing by itself. What decides a rewire is the condition of the cable, the accessories and the terminations, plus how much has gone in over the years. A safety assessment reports on all of that, and the answer is often a section of the house rather than the whole of it.
Three things travel together on a rental. Our electrician fits new smoke alarms and tests each one. A safety assessment takes in the installation behind them, and whatever the tenant has reported joins the list. Booking them as one attendance means the tenant answers the door once.
A light that answers a hedge and a network point that has to cross a garden look like different jobs. Both start at the switchboard and finish somewhere out in the garden, so one electrician prices the pair on one visit.
