Maroondah Electrical Data Solar Vic

Electrician Oakleigh

You want a 15 amp point in the garage to charge the car. In an Oakleigh house, and anywhere else across Melbourne's south-east, that point looks like every other power point on the wall. Behind the plaster it's a different circuit: heavier cable, its own protection, and a spare way waiting at the switchboard. Reading the board before anyone marks the wall is how Maroondah Electrical & Data has worked since 1998, and our electrician does it at your property. Ring 03 9738 2000 with the Oakleigh address and what the new circuit has to run. The quote for that visit is free.

What Oakleigh Locals Say About Our Electrical Services

review quote

We just want to say how happy we are with the work you did to install the 4 reverse cycle air conditioners. As business owners employing 20 staff, we appreciate good service. Dean was great, arriving on time a day after we settled. He was very clear and transparent on the outcome. The installers were all very nice people and had great attention to detail. The electrician even fixed a loose tile on our roof!

Dean mentioned that one unit would have to have an internal duct, but the installer hid that and also re-routed another to be more aesthetically pleasing. Something they didn’t have to do, but the result was excellent. All trades collected every bit of rubbish and left our place perfect. We give 100% for price, neatness, attention to detail, communication, friendliness, and a great installation.

Can You Just Put a Bigger Power Point in the Garage?

A bigger power point on its own won’t do it. The socket is the visible end of a circuit, and the rating belongs to the whole run, not to the fitting you can see.

Australian plugs make that hard to get wrong. A 15 amp plug carries a wider earth pin than a standard 10 amp one, so it won’t physically enter an ordinary socket. A 10 amp plug fits a 15 amp outlet without any trouble. The pin is a mechanical stop. You cannot plug a heavier appliance into a circuit nobody built to carry it, however ordinary the outlet looks from the front.

Behind a 15 amp outlet you’ll find cable sized for that current, a protective device to match, and a run of its own back to the switchboard. Our electrician works out on site how far that run has to travel, what route it can take, and whether the board has a way to spare. Where it has none, the board becomes the first job and the outlet the second.

Some equipment skips the socket altogether. We wire a reverse cycle air conditioner straight into a circuit of its own, with no plug on it at all, so there’s nothing on a wall to inspect. Two units going in means two circuits and two ways at the board. The board answers that long before anyone picks a spot for them.

Work we take on at an Oakleigh house:

  • A charging point for the car, or a fixed appliance, each on a circuit run back to the board for it alone
  • Reverse cycle air conditioner installation, ceiling fans indoors or over a deck, and heat pump hot water
  • A replacement switchboard, or a bigger supply behind it, once the existing board has nothing left to give
  • Extra lighting and power points, smoke alarms we supply and test, and a safety assessment when you want every circuit looked over
  • Fault finding, rewiring, home automation, and test and tagging where a home office or a workshop needs it
  • Telephone systems, computer data cabling, and the outlets those cables land on

Before Maroondah Electrical & Data Opens Your Switchboard

Maroondah Electrical & Data dates from 1998, a family business opened by Glenn Carmody, Dean Carmody, Stuart Lancaster. You will find the office and the workshop together at 6 Royan Place, Bayswater North, Victoria 3153. Oakleigh belongs to the City of Monash, about 14 kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD, and an Oakleigh booking begins with that drive.

Insurance and a current licence travel with every electrician on the team, and we certify each job as we finish it. Every one of those jobs runs under electrical contractor licence REC 27611, whoever knocks on your Oakleigh door. The rest of the detail lives on our about us page.

Where a Desk Phone and a Network Point Take Their Power From

A desk handset or a wireless access point usually draws its power from the cable that carries its data. What it wants at the wall is an outlet wired back to the switch. A power socket beside it does nothing for the handset, and the number of power points in a fitout rarely matches the number of devices.

Take on a small tenancy around Eaton Mall or the streets behind it and that distinction earns its keep early. The equipment list is really two lists. A machine on the counter, a fridge and a heater at the entry are rated circuits before they are positions on a plan. A board wired for the last tenant seldom suits the next one. The terminal, the handset and the access point are cable runs instead.

We quote both lists together. Computer data cabling and telephone systems are our own work, so one visit prices the power and the cabling behind it. Test and tagging, emergency and exit lighting, three-phase power and scheduled maintenance go on that quote too, where the premises need them.

Adding Downlights, or Chasing Something That Has Stopped

Putting twenty new downlights through a house is mostly a wiring job, and the fittings are the small part of it. How many separately switched groups you want out of them decides the work. All twenty on one switch is a single wire back to the plate. Four groups is four wires, each running back through the ceiling to one plate, so settle the switching before anyone marks a hole in the plaster. Lighting and power, indoors and out, covers the rest of that work.

Something that has stopped is the other half of a normal week. A bathroom exhaust fan gone quiet, or a ceiling light that answers one switch but not the other, tells you where the trouble shows and nothing about where it lives. Fault finding is one of this business’s specialties, and it means tracing a fault back to its true source instead of changing parts until something moves.

The Questions That Decide an Oakleigh Quote

Two air conditioners are going in. Does each one need its own circuit?

A fixed reverse cycle unit takes a circuit of its own, sized for what it draws and separate from the power circuits in the rest of the house. Two units means two circuits and two ways at the switchboard. What the board has left decides whether that's a short job or a board upgrade first, and the answer changes house by house, never suburb by suburb. Two houses built in one decade can come back differently, whether both are in Oakleigh or one of them is a job for an electrician in Mount Waverley.

Can you tell us over the phone whether the switchboard has room?

The switchboard has to come open for that answer. Spare ways are only half of it. Our electrician also reads what the existing circuits already carry, what protects each one, and what the main switch will hold. The face of the board shows none of that. Our electrician opens the board at the property, on the one visit that covers the rest of your list.

The bathroom exhaust fan has stopped. Does the whole unit have to come out?

An exhaust fan that has stopped is not always a dead fan. The motor, the switch controlling it, the timer where there is one, and the connection above the ceiling are all candidates. Which one it turns out to be decides whether the fix is a part or a replacement. Our electrician settles that before anything comes out of the ceiling.

We let out a house in Oakleigh. What does a safety assessment actually cover?

A safety assessment goes over the whole installation, well past whatever stopped working. Our electrician tests every smoke alarm and safety switch, then checks the placement of each alarm. The switchboard and the accessible wiring come next, checked for faults and for wear that hasn't shown itself yet. Safety assessments sets out the full scope.

Make the list of what is going in before you decide where it goes. That list is what our electrician reads the switchboard against on the day.

Once you've made that list, phone 03 9738 2000 and book the free quote, or hand it to us on our contact page.
